RAYNES, DANAE, and STYX
She'd been here. Raynes could tell by the scent marks around the place, her musk strong and odorous but somehow still mixing in with the scent of the pines. Even despite the aftermath of the rain leaving the scents muddied, he still knew hers like the back of his paw. His muzzle was held low to the ground, walking forward and leading the small group behind him. He stopped at a shrub, noting that some of its branches had been chewed off and an indent of a large paw marked the rain-softened soil beside it.
"Wowww, we've been walking for so long! Maybe we can take a break? 'Cuz I'm kinda tired, and hungry! So, maybe—AACK!!!" Raynes lifted his head and turned when he heard a yell from behind him, only to see small, thin Styx with his paw stuck in some mud. He said nothing, only watching as his brother struggled to unstuck his paw. "The mud's eating my foot!!"
Danae came up from behind Styx, stopping a few feet back. "Really, Twiggy? You just got stuck on a root, like, yesterday," she said, tilting her head. She backed up, before charging forward and giving him a nice hard shove. Styx was sent flying out of the mud and he tumbled across the ground until he landed in the bush Raynes was investigating. Raynes looked down on the smaller male with cold grey eyes and a small frown, before he grabbed Styx by a paw and pulled him off the bush. The smaller male landed on the ground with a light thud. Raynes's eyes were focused on the bush, now broken up by Styx and useless as evidence. He turned back to his brother, watching him get back up on his paws. Then he started shaking the dirt and mud off his fur. Raynes flinched and stepped out of the way to avoid being pelted with filth.
"Styx," he said, firm and monotone. "We just started walking again after we spent the whole day resting. If you're tired, fine. Stop and take a rest. But I'm not going to wait for you." With that, he turned and kept walking, looking for more trails and more signs of the one he was looking for. Styx knew the way things were out here. They rested by day and traveled by night, the way Raynes needed. Though Styx tended to be too hyperactive in the morning... but whose fault was that?
Danae made her way by Raynes's flank, joining him in his search, while Styx lagged behind. He bounded up behind them. "Hey! Wait!" They didn't wait.
A half-eaten doe carcass lay beside the shrubs, partially hidden. Styx lay a few feet from it, chewing at a rib bone and cleaning the meat from it. Raynes sat beside the catch, licking his paws and cleaning himself in a feline manner. Danae stood over the deer, stripping a chunk of muscle from its thigh.
His teeth clinked against the bare bone, clearly audible in the silence, and Styx sighed. "This would be more fun if Nyx was here," he said. "I mean, yeah she was mean and ripped off my ear, but... I can't wait 'til we find her and bring her back home." Raynes stopped grooming, setting his paw down. Danae too was quiet, stopping what she was doing. She dropped the meat in her jaws and exchanged a glance with Raynes. Raynes turned his back to the others, watching the surrounding woods.
"Twig... I'm not so sure if she'll want to come back," said Danae finally, before nudging at the piece she dropped. Styx was still for a moment, focusing on the bone in front of him.
"But I thought..." He frowned, ears flattening. "Oh..."
"We might not ever go back," said Raynes, his voice a soft mutter barely audible over the breeze.
