Antoni had spent all evening tracking this buck down. He first spotted it when the sun was sitting high up in the sky, and he was out in some field that had the faintest smell of pack wolves. He'd overlooked it only because he was too hungry to pass up the opportunity, though he did keep it in the back of his mind as he stalked after the deer. Hopefully the wolves living here wouldn't mind if a buck went missing.
It was a nice change of pace from what he had been hunting just a few days prior. Voles, rabbits, birds... all small prey that really didn't do much in the wow factor of the hunt itself. He's always loved a good challenge, and while rabbits were quick and everything, they never posed much of a hindrance for him.
Deer, however, they were a different story. He couldn't recall the last time he'd eaten fresh deer. It had him salivating like a mutt as he trotted after its scent.
The first time he'd charged, it was to get the buck out of some thick underbrush that would've slowed him down. Sure, it was a nice obstacle for him to potentially use to his advantage, but he really wasn't in the mood for getting whacked by plants as he sprinted by or getting his legs all tangled up in vines. He had a much better chance at catching up with this thing out in the open where he had no obstacles to bypass.
He didn't managed to get a substantial bite in that time, just only a few nips to the buck's heels for some fear factor. It wasn't until his second chase he'd locked his jaws around its hind leg and both felt and heard the bone crack under the pressure of his bite.
It was both satisfying and sort of morbid, but it was music to his ears. A deer with a broken leg was as good as dead and it meant he didn't have to waste any more energy sprinting after it.
The sun was set by the time the buck had collapsed and started thrashing around. The sky was a beautiful swatch of purple, orange, and pink, that Antoni took a moment to admire before he was on the deer, avoiding its lethal hooves as he sunk his teeth into its neck and squeezed.
After it ceased moving and went rigid, Antoni dropped its neck and panted as he turned his attention to watch the sun set.
It's been a while since he's been able to eat and watch the sun recede past the horizon.
