The Story Leading Here
Rain
By herself again, Rain was getting more and more doubtful that there was even a pack around here. All she's met is loners and she's been in pack territory for like, days. Some phantom pack; a ghost wolf who keeps pissing all over to mark the territory. She's pretty sure her sister was somewhere around here, but it's been a while and by now Rain has stopped concerning herself with it so much.
Shit was tiring, and Rain took a moment to sit down. The last time she ate was a day or two ago, after she left a group of all-around unpleasant loners. Melody seemed nice, the only one at that. Rain just wasn't in the mood for Harmony, who was overly defensive of her sister to the point that Rain was positive there was some unhealthy codependency going on there and... not today lord, she wasn't gonna be patient and watch that mess unfold. And then their was Paint... Rain didn't get the best feeling from her right off the bat -- she ended up being fine and all, but Rain just couldn't forget the bad vibes.
Didn't matter much now though, she figured. Those wolves were what they were, and Rain wouldn't mind meeting them again if that's what fate wanted. Rain was interested to know how those sisters acted apart from one another, but she wasn't about to try and separate them.
By now Rain was lost in her thoughts, blankly "staring" at the ground as she sat. What if she really did see those loners again? Paint did mention seeking out the pack to join despite her "inferiority." Well, if she came across Paint again, Rain would just be sure to be weary.
Rain
Being so spaced out, Rain didn't actually register the wolf coming for her. By the time she snapped out of it enough to realize it could be a problem, she was pinned under some huge girl. Rain yelped in surprise and initially tried to escape, but it was useless. This bitch was big and threatening, and she wasn't the only one either! Another girl wasn't too far behind. They smelled like they belonged to the pack here but sure weren't acting like it. Who ambushes a random, innocent wolf? But then again... the girl who had her pinned said, "Pretty dumb move to be taking a rest in wolf territory." The way she said "wolf territory" instead of "pack territory" or "claimed territory"... they thought she was a coyote. Rain huffed out a breath, annoyed, but was still shaking under the woman above her.
Obviously she was ready to rip Rain's throat out. It wasn't the time to make a snide remark or waste any time saying anything other than what would save her in that moment. "I'm a wolf," Rain quickly said, doing her best to remain calm. To remain calm despite her fear of dying in this moment and despite her annoyance with being mistaken for something so nasty. In order to not be blamed for lying, she figured she should clarify: "Half wolf." Rain couldn't blame her for wanting to take out a coyote, but the entire situation was rubbing her the wrong way. Shouldn't pack wolves be more civilized or something?
"Is this how y'all recruit new members?" Rain asked rhetorically. It was dumb to risk her life to be sarcastic but being pinned to the ground by some beefcake... it was weird.
Rain
Of course the bigger girl didn't believe her, who would? That didn't make it any less annoying. All at once there were teeth digging into her muzzle that she didn't anticipate and Rain whimpered in both pain and surprise. She tried to struggle free but it was no use, and it didn't matter anyways 'cause the girl didn't continue. Weird. Rain only assumed she was being killed. This wolf was so ready to kill her earlier and after such a stupid quick comment from Rain... Well, she must've been convinced Rain was at least some wolf. Unless she just liked to play with her food.
"This is how we deal with pests," she said and pushed her paw into Rain's throat. Pressed up against the cold ground Rain only nodded quickly, apologetically, whatever would keep her from getting bit again. "I'll take that half-wolf bullshit, only because you smell different from other coyotes, but do you really think you pass as a wolf?"
She shook her head shortly. "I get mistaken for a coyote a lot. Guess that means I don't pass." What was she supposed to do about it? She doesn't pass for coyotes, who ganged up on her out of fear, and she didn't pass for wolves, who ganged up on her out of disgust.
Rain tried her best to get comfortable under the other wolf since apparently this wasn't going to change anytime soon. "I'm not here to hurt anyone," though she doubted she could take these two anyway. And maybe now wasn't the best time to mention she wanted to join the pack, it was too humiliating after this. Maybe she didn't even want to join the pack, not if everyone would be so biased against her. Perhaps she'll need to move on again. But surviving is hard, and pureblood wolves will hate her wherever she goes, so Rain might just have to deal with it.
Rain
It felt so nice when the heavy paw was no longer holding her down. Rain didn't stand up though, only shifted to lay on her side to continue speaking. "So then, what are you here for?" The girl interrogated. Rain couldn't be sure, but she got the feeling the threat from her wasn't clear. Still, she didn't bother to stand up.
"I can't survive on my own," she confessed. Maybe being honest really was the best tactic here. Rain decided to work past the shame from being caught off guard earlier and continued. "I'm not helpless -- y-you caught me at a bad moment. I'm a huntress, believe it or not." Of course they wouldn't believe it though, especially not the one who pinned her down, she seemed to have a knack for making fun of Rain.
Maybe if she poked around on a topic these wolves and herself clearly felt mutual on. "Wolves don't like me around. And coyotes.. well, I'd rather be alone and die than team up with them. And I will, if I can't find a wolf pack who'll accept me." There, get it out in the open. They hate coyotes, Rain hates coyotes! It's stupidly ironic, considering how cursed Rain was to look like the spitting image of one. Couldn't she have been a little more wolfy? It would make interactions like this much easier, that's for sure.
Rain
And there that bitch went again, making fun of her. What Rain said really did sound like she was wallowing in self-pity, but she only went that far to prove herself!! A foolish remark to defend herself was on the edge of her tongue, but when the girl suggested a hunt, an interested smile grew in their place. "I'm not about to waste my alpha's time with somebody who won't pull their own weight. You're a huntress, aren't you? If you're any good, you won't say no to my challenge... How does a coyote hunt sound?"
Rain stood then, clearly lured in by this idea. Apparently all those attempts at convincing her with words weren't working for a reason -- the big girl must be a wolf of action. Now reading the situation a little better, Rain softly assured her: "Time won't be wasted."

Nyx
Well, it was time to check out the northern border. It was no surprise Nyx spent most of her time hanging around East Shelt—besides work, she just liked woods like these. They reminded her of the better parts of home, the parts that weren't painful to remember. She hopped onto a small boulder and stood up there, looking over the surrounding forest. Sunlight broke past the canopy, shining down on her and making her glow. She closed her eyes for a few moments, basking in the warmth of the light. Fuck, she was tired. This really wasn't her time of day, especially after she'd been up all night, then got put on this patrol when she came back to the den around sun-up.
Fuck, she was starting to burn up. So she launched herself off that rock and shook out her mane, some attempt at shaking off her drowsiness. Yeah, she wasn't really a morning wolf. Never was. After trotting on ahead to take a quick leak on a bush and mark it, she scratched at the dirt then went to go brush her flank against a tree, the bark scratching at an itch she had but she was doing it mostly to just spread her scent around.
She stopped, taking in a weird fucking scent. Some kind of canine, kinda like a wolf but a coyote at the same time? Whatever that was, it was funky. Nyx sniffed on that trail for a good minute, her nose pressed against the ground, until she raised her head and sneezed.
She sniffled and licked her chops. She tested the trail again. Yeah. She couldn't place that. Nyx began trotting along the trail, tracking down whatever animal made it. Wolf? Coyote? Some fucked-up in-between? Who knew? Whatever it was, she wanted to see what it was and she'd be prepared for anything that would come. And if this animal decided to get violent, well, Nyx would just kill it.
Nyx stayed low and kept herself downwind of it so she could get the jump on whatever this thing was. After her time in the Nightstalkers, stealth had become second-nature to her. Keeping her footsteps light and avoiding the litter was as natural as breathing. She stopped, hidden among the shrubs and tall drying grasses when she spotted a small canine sitting in the middle of the forest. It looked like a coyote to Nyx, with that short height, huge pointy ears, narrow muzzle, and those sandy and rust tones that made up her pelt. There were wolves that color, but it was the way it was patterned that gave it away. Her muscles tensed with anticipation as she stared the coyote down.
She didn't look her way and seemed completely unaware of her presence, simply staring down at the ground quietly. What an idiot. After a few seconds, Nyx released that tension like a spring and charged the coyote, tackling her and slamming her to the ground in a swift move. In an instant, she pressed her large paw against her throat, providing light pressure to keep her down and uncomfortable but not enough to choke.
"Pretty dumb move to be taking a rest in wolf territory," Nyx said, looking down at the smaller canine and drawing her lips back in a fanged grin. "Got any reason why I shouldn't kill you right now?" Nyx didn't really care about explanations, but it was fun to let these dirty coyotes try and talk their way out of things, only to end up dead in her jaws.

"Is this how y'all recruit new members?" Rain asked rhetorically. It was dumb to risk her life to be sarcastic but being pinned to the ground by some beefcake... it was weird.
Nyx
"I'm a wolf," the coyote lied, which only made Nyx press her paw harder against her throat. Coyotes could really be something sometimes, but she hadn't known one idiotic enough to try and claim to be a wolf. That was a whole new level of insulting that would make Nyx laugh if it weren't coming from a fucking coyote.
"Do you think I'm stupid? Anybody with a nose and eyes can tell you're no fucking wolf," said Nyx, her words laced with a venomous growl. Staring down at the coyote, she noticed a cloudiness in her eyes that suggested she couldn't see shit which only made Nyx's comment more fitting. No wonder she thought that was going to work, she probably didn't even know what she looked like if she thought anyone would think she was a wolf. The coyote rectified herself, this time saying she was half wolf. Yeah, like Nyx was going to believe that after being blatantly lied to. "Right. And I'm half cougar."
She paused to take a deeper inhale of the coyote's scent, noting that same weirdness that permeated what she picked up on earlier. Maybe she wasn't lying there, seeing as she didn't really smell like a full on coyote either. But she sure as hell wasn't a wolf, regardless of how much she insisted she was. "I guess that explains why you smell fucking weird," she said under her breath. With this coyote's attitude, Nyx wouldn't be surprised if it did end up getting messy.
"Is this how y'all recruit new members?" the coyote-wolf commented, getting all snarky when she was pinned down and had her life in Nyx's jaws. Nyx snapped for her muzzle, digging her teeth in and slicing through her skin like a warm knife through butter. She jerked her head away and licked the crimson staining her lips.
"This is how we deal with pests," she said, pressing her paw harder against the coyote's larynx, enough to cut off her air for a couple of seconds, before she let up. Just letting the coyote-wolf know she was serious and this shit wasn't a game. "I'll take that half-wolf bullshit, only because you smell different from other coyotes, but do you really think you pass as a wolf?"

Nyx
Looked like that bite was enough to quiet the coyote-wolf down. Nyx thought about just killing her, but fucking around with her seemed like more fun. And once that fun was had, well... there was no telling if the smaller girl was going to get out of this alive. Nyx couldn't hold back her smirk as the coyote-wolf just gave her a pathetic little nod and shake of her head in response to her words. All that blood looked pretty nice trickling from the cuts Nyx left her. It was tempting.
Yeah, that's right. She didn't pass. As far as Nyx could tell, she just looked like a regular old coyote. Maybe a little bigger than most coyotes. She might've been small but the legs were a little long proportionally, while coyotes tended to have some stumpy ass legs. The way Nyx saw it, she'd still fit in better with the coyotes. She'd probably just be seen as one ugly ass coyote. But it's not like fitting in was something coyotes gave a fuck about. Maybe some wolves fancied themselves rogues, but coyotes were real rogues.
"I'm not here to hurt anyone," said the coyote-wolf.
Nyx let out a low chuckle. "That's right, because you know you wouldn't stand a chance." Maybe this bitch wasn't completely stupid, lying low and trying to avoid a fight when she was flat on her back. That was the smart move to make. Nyx pulled her paw off the coyote-wolf and let her free. She took a few steps back to make a bit of space, in case the bitch tried going for her ankles or something.
"So then, what are you here for?" Nyx asked, silver stare fixed down on the stranger. She widened her stance a bit and stood on ready.

It felt so nice when the heavy paw was no longer holding her down. Rain didn't stand up though, only shifted to lay on her side to continue speaking. "So then, what are you here for?" Nyx
Nyx stared down at the coyote-wolf, who just shifted over onto her side. The girl admitted to not being able to survive on her own, a show of vulnerability that sparked a bit of interest in Nyx. She proceeded to say she wasn't helpless, mentioning she could hunt. If that was true, they could use her. Not many hunters in the Guardians of Syndrana, apparently. Nyx found herself bagging whatever game she could during her patrols because just two hunters really wasn't enough to keep a place fed. Mostly, she just ate it herself, but sometimes she was generous and brought some back to share. She was sure Drogo and that other dude would love having an extra set of paws around, but she wanted to see if this chick actually was any good before bringing a dud to the alpha.
She said nothing, just listening. The coyote-wolf went on with this bullshit like weh wolves don't want her around and weh she'd rather die alone than team up with a dirty coyote! Oh, can't forget the 'I will if no wolves will take me!' Nyx's ears pulled back and she curled her lip.
"Holy fuck, suck it up already," Nyx growled. Who gave a fuck about this coyote-wolf's dilemma about wanting to be a wolf so bad? Not Nyx. Would they even have any use for somebody like this? Who had such a hard time by herself that she really was planning on dying alone because wolves rejected her? What a little bitch. Nyx spent nearly the past year as a loner. She'd been rejected hundreds of times, by everyone around her, including her own pack.
This didn't tell Nyx this girl wasn't helpless. All it told Nyx was that she desperately needed other people to rely on.
"You said you're not helpless, so fucking act like it. Save this woe-is-me bullshit for somebody who gives a fuck," Nyx said. What was clear was this chick didn't care that much for coyotes, despite looking exactly like one. Too bad for her. There was a short pause. "I'm not about to waste my alpha's time with somebody who won't pull their own weight. You're a huntress, aren't you? If you're any good, you won't say no to my challenge."
Nyx raised her posture. A grin crept up her face before she focused again on the coyote-wolf. "How does a coyote hunt sound?"

Lost in the abyss, drowned in the deep
No set of lungs could salvage me
Save yourself, save your breath
The tide's too strong, you'll catch your death
Looked like the coyote-wolf perked up at the idea of a coyote hunt. She stood right up and even had a little smile on her face. "Time won't be wasted," the coyote-wolf said.
Nyx smirked. Now this was what she liked to hear. None of that self-pity bullshit. "We'll see about that." She wasn't about to believe in some coyote-wolf she just met a second ago who'd been saying a lot of dumb shit, but she was open to seeing what she could do at least. And besides, Nyx was itching to rip into something. Just one of those days, y'know?
She sniffed the air, her nose pretty easily managing to pick up on the remnants of a scent trail. It was pretty old and stale, at least a few hours old. Nyx padded along the fringes of the trail, sniffing a little more intently. Yeah. This was good enough. It might take them a minute to really track something down, but it was a decent enough start to put them in the direction of something. She glanced back at the coyote wolf. "C'mon. Gotta find some coyotes before we can kill them."
With that, Nyx started on the trail, sniffing as she went.
