E M M E T T
The last time Emmett was in Aurora Creek he was 27 and driving a stolen car. This time around, sitting in the parking lot of a quaint looking park at a quarter after midnight, everything felt so different. The piece of junk he was driving was legally his, he was older, had a few more scars, and the carefree feeling he had rolling into this town all those years ago was nowhere in to be seen. He was a bundle of anxiety with a sense of purpose. Emmett was here on a mission.
But not fucking tonight. Em took a deep breath and let go of his iron grip on the steering wheel, glancing out both front windows. Hopefully nobody had seen him just then, sitting in his car frozen for probably 30 damn minutes just working himself up. He snatched his phone out of the cup holder to his truck and ran a hand through his hair, checking himself out in the rear view mirror. You look like a mess, old dog, he thought, pressing on the dark bags under his eyes. Hours of nonstop driving will do that to a dude, but he had to get into Aurora Creek. Wouldn't take his foot off the gas until he'd crossed the town's border.
Emmett pressed the truck's door open and slid out in one swift movement, stretching out his legs and arms with a groan that was lost in the night. With a suspicious look at the shadows between some nearby trees he quickly decided to reach back in and grab a beer out of the back seat. It was warm and would taste awful but there was no way he was getting some sleep right now, even with the fatigue he felt. Might as well drink away his fear of the dark in the meantime.
The slamming of his door was loud but Em paid it no mind, and neither did any of the nonexistent people who, unlike him, had the common sense to not be hanging out in the park after midnight like a creep. He walked a couple steps into the place and glanced around, taking a long swig of his drink. Well, fuck it. Emmett dropped down onto the dry park grass and sprawled out on his back, looking up at the stars. The corner of his mouth pulled up at the sight and he gripped his drink tighter. "Not bad." It felt less dark and lonely like this, he thought, and suppressed a shiver. It felt good to get fresh air but he'd need to find a coat soon. The worn-out hoodie that boasted some random community college's name from a few states back wouldn't last him much longer, with winter right around the bend. Especially if he was going to be laying in parks around Aurora Creek from now on.
